Dr. Carl C. Peck to Receive Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development

Alexandria, VA (December 15, 2011)--Carl C. Peck, MD, has been selected by the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) as the 2012 recipient of the Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development.

The award recognizes individuals and collaborative teams leading scientific breakthroughs in clinical drug development. It was established in 2004 to honor Dr. Gary Neil, the innovative former Executive Vice President of Worldwide Research and Development at Wyeth-Ayerst.

ASCPT will present the award to Dr. Peck on March 14, 2012, prior to the opening session of the 113th Annual Meeting at the National Harbor in Maryland.

Dr. Peck is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Chairman of NDA Partners LLC. Throughout his career, Dr. Peck has held research and leadership positions in academic, government and private institutions that focus on drug development and regulation.

During his tenure as Director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and Assistant U.S. Surgeon General (1987-1993), Dr. Peck championed quantitative clinical pharmacology as the core science of modern drug development and regulation. Following his sabbatical year as "Boerhaave" Professor of Clinical Drug Research at Leiden University in The Netherlands, Dr. Peck founded the Center for Drug Development Science (CDDS) at the Georgetown University Medical Center in 1995. There, he led teams that researched pioneering applications of modeling and simulations of clinical trials and contributed to the FDA Modernization Act of 1997. The CDDS moved to the UCSF in 2004, where Dr. Peck co-founded the American Course in Drug Development and Regulatory Science (ACDRS) in 2007.

As a mentor and educator, Dr. Peck has trained more than 30 graduate and postdoctoral scholars. He has been recognized as a Fellow by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, American College of Clinical Pharmacology, and the American College of Physicians. In 1999, Dr. Peck received the FDA Distinguished Alumni Award "continued outstanding efforts to improve the science of drug development in this country and abroad". Sweden's University of Uppsala conferred an honorary doctorate degree (Doctor Honoris Causa) to Dr. Peck in January 2002 in recognition of "outstanding contributions to the science of drug development". Many prestigious awards followed, highlighting Dr. Peck's contributions as a researcher, educator, and consultant for the biopharmaceutical industry. Inventor of eight patents, Dr. Peck has authored more than 150 original research papers, chapters and books.
